Trisha Davis' last bit of independence is a battered, leaky trailer home older than she is. "I'm getting pretty good at cooking on a wood stove," she said recently. The trailer has a propane stove, but she can't afford propane.

Berg Named To City Council

Gov. Phil Batt on Thursday appointed businesswoman Diane Berg to fill a vacant seat on the Spirit Lake City Council. "I'm glad people have that much faith in me," Berg said. She said she wants to help heal political divisions that have split the town in the wake of Police Chief Jeff Alexander's firing.

5-Year-Old Crash Victim Still Critical

An Athol, Idaho, girl remained unconscious and in critical condition Monday, two days after a crash that killed her 8-year-old brother and severely injured their mother. Sarah Weick, 5, is at Sacred Heart Medical Center's pediatric intensive care unit, said Tina Weick, a relative. "They're still watching for swelling of the brain," she said. "The doctors said it will be two or three days before she's out of the woods completely. She's still in a sleeping state."

Mayor In Secret Meetings, Critics Say Spirit Lake Residents Claim Knapp Met Council Members At His Home

Some Spirit Lake residents are accusing Mayor Bob Knapp of holding secret meetings because City Council members were spotted at his home. "If they have something to discuss, they should be discussing it in front of the whole council," said Teresa Morgan, a neighbor of Knapp's. Sunday and Monday, she and city critic Sandy Faubion said they saw city police and councilmen Rod Erickson and Ed Hanna at Knapp's home.

Nez Perce Raising Funds To Buy Back Artifacts

The Nez Perce Indian Tribe is turning to the Internet to help raise $608,100 to purchase tribal artifacts. "We have until June 1 to try to raise the necessary funds," tribal member Sam Penney said Wednesday. "It's a formidable task."
