Washington Water Power Co. and Sierra Pacific Resources Thursday asked federal regulators to approve their proposed merger.

The application submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is one of several the two utilities must file before combining as Resources West Energy Corp.

Filings with regulators in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada and California are expected next week.

Spokane-based WWP serves electricity and natural gas customers in all those states but Nevada, where the bulk of Reno-based Sierra Pacific’s customers reside.

Together, the utilities will serve 520,000 electric customers, 270,000 natural gas customers and 58,000 water customers.

In testimony included with the FERC filing, WWP Chairman Paul Redmond estimates the merger will trim $450 million from the combined utilities’ expenses over the next 10 years.

Shareholder consent to the merger, which was announced June 28, is also required.
