Last Year’S Winners

1993 MALE WINNER

New Zealander Cameron Brown, 22, blasted to a victory by a one second margin at last year’s Scenic Challenge, giving spectators the most exciting Coeur d’Alene Triathlon men’s finish ever.

Completing the course in 1:53.42, Brown crossed the finish line with Chuck Veylupek (Chuckie V) right on his heels.

Brown won’t be back in Coeur d’Alene this year. An operation on his sinuses cut short the young New Zealander’s race schedule.

Brown plans to try to qualify for the world championships by competing in the ITU World Cup races. He has to earn points in at least five races to qualify. One of those qualifying races is in WilkeBarre, Pa., the same day as the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon.

He’ll also race in Spain, France, Monte Carlo and Japan.

In 1992, Brown finished second in the Junior World Championships. The Scenic Challenge was Brown’s first victory in the United States in three races.

1993 FEMALE WINNER

Sarah Harrow probably wasn’t thinking about New Zealand keeping the female title to the Scenic Challenge as she raced to her victory in Coeur d’Alene last year.

Her win in 2:08.30 was nearly three minutes faster than her closest competitor. But it was almost three minutes slower than fellow New Zealander Jenny Rose’s record-setting 1992 finish.

Still, Harrow walked away from Coeur d’Alene with $1,750 and isn’t returning this year.

After leaving Coeur d’Alene last year, Harrow won the junior women’s title at the World Championships in Manchester, England. Her stellar performances won her a berth this year on New Zealand’s elite team.

In June, she won a triathlon in Japan and competed in July in the Asian triathlon championships.

A student at the University of Canterbury, Harrow, 21, is studying speech and language therapy.
