Sadako Maruyama Spokane

Memorial service for Sadako Maruyama, 102, will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Highland Park United Methodist Church with burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

A Spokane resident for 49 years, Mrs. Maruyama died Monday. Born in Tatsuno, Japan, she came to the United States in 1916 as a “picture bride.” She and her husband, Masuzo Maruyama, lived in Medford, Ore., until his death in 1941.

After three years in Japanese internment camps in California and Idaho during World War II, she settled in Spokane.

Mrs. Maruyama graduated from Friends’ Girls College in Japan. In the United States, she worked as secretary for officials of the Japanese Railroad Company. She spent more than 40 years as a correspondent for The North American Post, a Japanese paper in Seattle, before retirement in 1986. She received American citizenship in 1964.

She was a member and former organist of Highland Park United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Teruko Maruyama of Spokane; three sons, Yoshio and Saburo Maruyama of Spokane, and Kazuo Maruyama of Olympia; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clifford Chase Spokane

Graveside service for Clifford P. Chase, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Chase, who died Sunday, was a longtime Spokane resident.

He is survived by his friend, Peggy Jenkins of Spokane.

Raymond Portch Wilbur, Wash.

Funeral Mass will be held for Raymond A. Portch, 66, at 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wilbur. Burial will be at Sherman Cemetery near Wilbur. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Portch, who died Tuesday, was a lifetime Wilbur resident.

He was a World War II and Korean War Army veteran. He retired from the Lincoln County Road Department in 1990.

Mr. Portch was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6268 in Wilbur.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jackie Portch, at home; two daughters, Kimberley Mustard and Nina-Khyd Gill, both of Cheney; three brothers, Dan and Dale Portch, both of Wilbur, and Jim Portch of Lynnwood, Wash.; two sisters, Nora Miller of Wilbur and Elaine Zeiler of Lynnwood; and three grandchildren.

Arnold Timerson Spokane

Service for Arnold R. Timerson, 78, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home with burial at Riverside Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Timerson, who died Wednesday, was a 75-year resident of Spokane. He was born in Greenwood, Wis.

He was a self-employed painting contractor.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bess Timerson, at home; three daughters, Renee Sinnott, Karen Herrington and Sandra Larson, all of Spokane; one sister, Elsie St. Clair of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

Joey Dolan Spokane

Funeral Mass for Joey A. Dolan, 73, will be held at 9 a.m. today at St. Paschal Catholic Church. HennesseySmith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dolan, who died Tuesday, was a longtime Spokane resident. He was born in Burke County, N.D.

He was a prize fighter from 1942 to 1948 with a record of 57-7-2, and was inducted into the Inland Empire Sports Hall of Fame October 16, 1991.

He was a custodian for the Spokane Valley School District from 1976 to 1986.

His memberships included Eagles Lodge Aerie No. 2 and the Grads Club of Mountain View.

His wife, Irene Dolan, died in 1991.

Mr. Dolan is survived by one son, Joe Dolan of Spokane; two stepsons, Greg Brown and Michael Murphy, both of Spokane; four daughters, Patricia Blay and Shannon Skiles, both of Spokane, Kathleen Ott of Portland and Timmie Linehan of Chelan, Wash.; one stepdaughter, Patty Griscoll of Spokane; two brothers, Jack and Murphy Dolan, both of Spokane; 12 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

David Dixon Spokane

No service will be held for David L. Dixon, 59, at his request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Dixon, who died Wednesday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

A graduate of Rogers High School and Eastern Washington State University, he was a social worker here and in San Francisco.

He is survived by his brother, Larry Dixon of Spokane.

Marguerett Crump Spokane

Service for Marguerett Crump, 69, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church with burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball & Dodd Funeral HomeSouth is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crump, who died Tuesday, was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Verdia Davis and Gloria Jean Crump, both of Spokane, and Rose Crump of Tacoma; two sons, Samuel and David Crump, both of Spokane; one brother, Woodrow Harris of Tacoma; eight grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter.

Josephine McGowan Spokane

Vigil service for Josephine E. McGowan, 96, will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Rose Chapel, HennesseySmith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. McGowan died Sunday in Pleasant Hill, Calif. A resident of Cathedral Plaza, she moved to Spokane in 1949.

She was an admitting clerk for Sacred Heart Hospital and a member of St. Aloysius Parish and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Her husband, James McGowan, died in 1954.

She is survived by three sons, James McGowan of Edmonds, Wash., Joseph McGowan of Daly City, Calif., and John McGowan of Pleasant Hills, Calif.; three daughters, Mary Matthews of Las Gatos, Calif., Dorothy Wright of Seattle and Barbara Ann Redinger of Colbert; 29 grandchildren and 37 greatgrandchildren.

David Howerton Hayden Lake, Idaho

Service for David L. Howerton, 46, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at English Funeral Chapel in Post Falls, with burial following at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Howerton died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was born in Wallace and moved to Post Falls in 1955.

He served in the Army during Vietnam, then worked at Bunker Hill Mine’s smelter, Potlatch Mill in Coeur d’Alene and Imsamet Aluminum Recycling until his health failed.

His memberships included Church of the Open Door in Dalton Gardens and the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Howerton is survived by his wife of 25 years, Vicki Howerton, at home; three sons, Andy, Jesse and Jared Howerton, at home; his mother, Mary Coe of Post Falls; two brothers, Harold Howerton of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Guy Howerton of Coeur d’Alene; and one sister, Pam Stewart of Hayden Lake.

Dorcas Nelson Wilbur, Wash.

Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wilbur Lutheran Church for Dorcas G. Nelson. Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Nelson, 83, died Monday in Davenport, Wash. She was born in Cooperstown, N.D.

She graduated from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing in North Dakota.

She was a registered nurse and worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center, retiring in the mid-1970s. She moved to Wilbur in 1986.

Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Wilbur Lutheran Church and the Wilbur Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Her husband, Bert Nelson, died in 1973. She is survived by one son, Bert Nelson of Oakland, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Wyborney of Wilbur and Susan Seibold of Portland; one sister, Pauline Thomas of Spokane; one brother, Lee Bolkan of Richland; and six grandchildren.

Dorothy Alfano< Coeur d’Alene

Service for Dorothy M. Alfano, 77, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’ Alene. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Alfano, who died Monday, was born in Bowbelles, N.D.

She graduated from high school in Kellogg in 1935 and attended Butte Business College.

She worked for Curtis Wright Aircraft during World War II and moved to Spokane in 1946, where she worked for Union Oil Co. and J.L. Cooper. She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1979.

Mrs. Alfano was a member of the American Philatelic Society, past president of the Washington State Horseman, and a 4-H leader.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Al Alfano, at home; one daughter, Nancy Johnson of Baker City, Ore.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Harlow Simpson Spokane

Memorial service for Harlow C. Simpson, 81, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Simpson, who died Wednesday, was a longtime resident of Spokane. He was born in Geddes, S.D.

He worked for American Sign Company and was also a cabinetmaker. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vioria E. Simpson, in 1992.

He is survived by three sons, Neil, Allan and Donald Simpson, all of Spokane; one daughter, Kathy Denny of Spokane; three sisters, Osa Reusink of San Diego, Calif., Lova Long of Geddes and Devota Anderson of Columbus, Neb.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren

Dwight Kuhl Spokane

Service and burial for Dwight Melvin Kuhl, 71, is being planned in Plainview, Neb. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kuhl, who died Monday, was a 15-year Spokane resident. He was born in Plainview.

Mr. Kuhl worked for the Army-Air Force Exchange Service, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Plainview and of the Elks Lodge in Spokane.

He is survived by one son, Rodney Kuhl, of Renton, Wash.; one stepson, Allen Dirks, of Bakersfield, Calif.; three sisters, Eline Brosh of Norfolk, Neb., Joan Gustman of Richland and Frances Manske of Pierce, Neb.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Inland Empire Diabetes Association.

Edna Utt Spokane

No service will be held for Edna Utt, 82, at her request. Thornhill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Utt, a 13-year resident of Spokane, died August 4. She was born in Crupp, Wash.

She worked as a bookkeeper for a printing company.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Utt.

Mrs. Utt is survived by two daughters, Lloyt (Mickey) Leibfried of Reardan, Wash., and Lea Rae Hart of Athol, Idaho; one brother, R.D. Thrall of Marlin, Wash.; two sisters, Vera Johnson of Almira, Wash., and Wilma Bonner of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Maurice Gunderson Spokane

Graveside service for Maurice A. Gunderson, 86, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gunderson, who died Monday, was born in Seattle.

He worked for Rainier Inc. in Hoquim, Wash., then owned and operated a motel there. He also worked for the Aberdeen School District and the State Liquor Control Board.

His memberships included the Elks Lodge No. 1082 and the VFW Post No. 2455. He was also the president of Youth Baseball League.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances Gunderson, at the home; one son, Dave Gunderson of Spokane; and one granddaughter.
