Bay Hotel Strike Possible

From Staff

Labor contracts covering more than 4,000 union workers at many of San Francisco’s largest hotels expire on Sunday, and that could lead to a strike unless negotiators can agree on job security.

Contracts for members of Hotel Employees Union Local 2 and Service Employees International Union Local 14 are set to expire Sunday. Workers are demanding a guarantee that would keep a union work force in place when hotels change hands.

The unions are fearful that one owner, William Kimpton who purchased the Sir Francis Drake last November, is an example of an industry trend to eliminate union labor.

Kimpton, who owns 13 hotels in the city, reopened the hotel in April with non-union workers. The move cost nearly 200 union jobs.
