Charity Root Beer Floats Will Conquer Heat
Hot weather getting you down?
Relief is at hand.
This weekend, the good folks at the Safeway store at Argonne and Mission are serving up one of the alltime best beat-the-heat treats known to mankind: Genuine A&W Root Beer floats.
The root beer float sale is part of a fund-raiser Safeway stores statewide are doing for the Eastern Seals Society. So for just $1, you can sip a cool, refreshing root beer float and support a fine charity at the same time.
You’ll also be able to enjoy German sausages for $1, hot dogs for 50 cents, various other foods, a street rod show, and a variety of musical entertainment - including a performance by an Elvis impersonator, who will swivel his hips and curl his lip while fronting the rock band Men in the Making on Sunday evening.
Hours are 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. today, and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
Last year, the nine Spokane-area Safeway stores together raised $41,000 for Easter Seals. Of that total, $15,000 was raised by the store at Argonne and Mission.
“The Argonne and Mission store was the No. 1 individual store in the state,” said Stacey Marsh of Eastern Seals Spokane office of last year’s root beer float fund-raiser.
“Some stores just sell the floats out of their deli,” Marsh said. “But they turn it into a big party. It’s a lot of fun.”
A&W donates the root beer, Lucerne donates the ice cream and Safeway employees do all the work, so every penny raised this weekend will go to Easter Seals, Marsh said. And, she added, all of the money raised in the Spokane area stays here.
Staging a merger
It’s official. The boards of Valley Repertory Theatre and Spokane Valley Community Players have finalized the merger of the two theater groups.
The Community Players have been absorbed into Valley Rep, which will continue to stage shows in its theater at Pines and Sprague. (For those who are counting, that’s just eight blocks off Broadway.)
With the addition of two former Community Players board members - Kerry Doherty, former chairman, and Kay Bryant - the Valley Rep board now numbers 13.
Valley Rep plans to stage seven productions during its 1994-95 season. The season opens Sept. 16 with “Little Footsteps,” directed by Sally Pence. The comedy runs through Oct. 1. For tickets or other information, call 927-6878.
