Who’s Who

Spokane County isn’t ready for a coroner with a cowboy hat. That’s the view of Jeff Rice, making his first run for office by trying to unseat Graham McConnell…When the Spokane Valley resident first came into the newspaper for a campaign photo, he sported long hair and a cowboy hat. A week later, Rice, 37, said some fellow Democrats advised him the cowboy image wouldn’t sit well with Spokane voters. So he repackaged his image and asked that a new photo be taken…Message to candidates: The newspaper will not make a habit of retaking photos every time you get your hair cut.

Didn’t she cancel her paper? Is it a change of heart? Or just opportunism? District Judge Donna Wilson blasted The Spokesman-Review when she announced for re-election, accusing the paper of being part of a conspiracy to discredit her. One of her early campaign pieces even impugned the integrity of a reporter who wrote a story about her alleged bookreading on the bench…So naturally the conspirators at the newspaper were shocked to find The Spokesman-Review featured prominently, and positively, in one of her honor’s recent campaign mailers. It uses a newspaper story to show her support for keeping traffic court open in Millwood … The campaign piece neglects to mention that Millwood court was forced into permanent recess in 1992 but that’s probably just one of those pesky legal technicalities.

Making up

Republican poo-bahs from around the West flew into Spokane last week to witness an unprecedented event. Three would-be GOP congressional nominees holding hands, smiling and promising to obey Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment about not speaking ill of another Republican. … John Sonneland, Duane Alton and George Nethercutt all promised to support the winner of the Sept. 20 primary, no matter what. Of course, since each thinks he will be the winner, that’s a fairly easy promise to make in August. We’ll check back Sept. 21 to see how happy two of them are about keeping that promise.

Campaign Calendar

Saturday: Last day to register to vote except at county elections offices. Sept. 10: Last day to register to vote, only at elections office. Absentee ballot must be cast at that time. Sept. 20: Primary election.

Aug. 18: 11:45 a.m. Lunelle Haught, Spokane County commissioner candidate, rally and picnic. $25. Aug. 25: 7 p.m. Jesse Wineberry, U.S. Senate candidate, public access broadcast on KSPS-TV channel 7. Sept. 10: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Candidate Fair sponsored by United We Stand, Washington. Franklin Park Mall.
