Soccer
The Spokane Skyhawks U-21 women’s team won the Wedgwood Keele Classic tournament in England last week, posting a 7-1 record before defeating the Millwall Lionesses with a 3-0 shootout win in the championship match. After a scoreless regulation and two scoreless overtimes, it took three saves by Spokane goalie Megan Keaty to seal the title. Scoring in the shootout were Jennifer Tissue, Alison Casey and Jeannie Reinolf.
The Skyhawks, who allowed three goals in nine games, advanced to the final with a 2-1 win over Liverpool, with both goals coming from Tissue.
Spokane’s Joey Rein was named the tournament MVP, while the team took home the sportsmanship trophy.
Volleyball
Lisa Sulatycki, a 1991 graduate of Louisiana State University, has been named the assistant women’s volleyball coach at Gonzaga University.
Sulatycki (pronounced sull-uhTIS-key) was a member of LSU’s 1990 NCAA Final Four team which also captured the Southeastern Conference title. A native of Toronto, Ontario, she has competed on the Ontario Provincial team and played for the Canadian Juniors championship club team.
Upon graduating from LSU with a bachelor of science degree in fitness studies, Sulatycki earned her master of arts in sports administration from Kent State University in 1993. Before joining the Gonzaga staff, she was an assistant volleyball coach at KSU the past three seasons, and was the interim head coach from February-April of 1993.
New and returning volleyball officials will meet today at 7 p.m. in room 203 of the Gonzaga University Administration Building. Anyone interested in officiating is invited to attend. Previous experience is not required.
Tennis
Mary Ryerse, boys and girls tennis coach at Spokane’s Shadle Park High since 1991, has been named head women’s tennis coach at Gonzaga University.
A 1990 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, Ryerse captained the school’s NCAA Division III National Championship team and earned AllAmerica status in 1980 and ‘90. She was also a two-time Academic AllAmerican, earning a degree in honors psychology with a minor in biology with a 3.8 GPA.
She is the director of the National Junior Tennis League in Spokane, and coached girls soccer at Shadle Park in 1992 and ‘93. She will continue teaching in the social studies department at Shadle Park with emphasis in humanities and psychology.
Hydros
The Second Annual Pateros Hydroplane Classic will be Aug. 20-21 on Lake Pateros, located on State Highway 97, north of Lake Chelan, where the Methow River meets the Columbia. Admission is $5 per day for adults or $7.50 for a two-day pass. Children 12 and under attend free.
