Portland Strike Possible
Union and management representatives met with a federal mediator Wednesday in an effort to avert a strike by 8,200 workers against Portland-area grocery stores.
The workers threatened to strike by midnight Wednesday.
Federal mediator Thomas Drew called both sides back for closed informal talks.
Rick Sawyer, spokesman for Local 555 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, said union negotiators were standing by in case the talks turned to formal contract discussions.
Local 555 represents about 7,000 grocery clerks, carry-out workers and meatcutters at 126 stores in the Portland and Vancouver, Wash., areas.
The negotiations involve Albertson’s, Fred Meyer, Safeway and other stores.
