Hale Leaves Apple Post

Tom Hale, who navigated the Washington Apple Commission through the 1989 Alar pesticide controversy and oversaw the recent opening of sales to Japan, China and Mexico, has resigned.

Hale, the 50-year-old president of the commission, will join Sun Pacific Corp. near Fresno, Calif., next month as vice president of marketing. The company grows and packs citrus, grapes and tomatoes.

The commission’s board of directors will meet next week to begin a search for Hale’s replacement.

Meanwhile, the board has appointed Vicky Scharlau, vice president of the commission, as acting president. Scharlau said she plans to leave at the end of the year to start her own consulting firm.
