CV Musicians Get Jump Start
Central Valley High School marching band players will start tuning up next week in several back-to-school band camps.
A percussion camp is set for Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., said director Brad Constantine.
Rookie camp for new band members and incoming sophomores is set for Aug. 26, starting at 9 a.m.
The entire marching band and color guard will practice from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Aug. 29 through Sept. 2, and from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sept. 6.
Constantine expects more than 100 CV High students to participate this year in the marching band, which won several awards last school year.
Attention deficit disorder workshop
About 70 slots are still open in a one-day Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder workshop designed for teachers, counselors, other professionals and parents.
The free program runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Trent Elementary, N3303 Pines Road, said organizer and teacher Lori Finley.
Finley wrote a proposal and received a $1,000 grant to bring family psychologist John F. Taylor to present the program.
Taylor, who is nationally recognized, will focus on practical solutions to issues facing parents, siblings and teachers of ADD or ADHD children.
About 150 people already have registered for the session. To register, call 927-9511.
Russian artists to present workshops
The East Valley School District and Eastern Washington University have teamed up to bring two Russian artists to the Valley for teacher workshops.
The program theme, “understanding cultures through the medium of fine arts,” will feature Anatoliy Ivanovich Golubtsov, an oil painter and mosaic artist, and Maria Yurievna Sahno, a student majoring in iconology and icon restoration, according to Donna Conboy, East Valley Education Association president.
East Valley and Eastern’s International Field Study Program have worked together for five years to sponsor intercultural programs for teachers and students in Eastern Washington.
The workshops for 10-20 teachers will be held in the art room at East Valley High School beginning Aug. 29, according to the EWU office. Depending on the number of people who sign up, they may run one to three days. The program is free, but participants should bring their own oil painting supplies, including canvases.
