Grocery Strike Continues

From Staff

No negotiations are scheduled in a strike by 8,200 grocery workers and Teamsters in the Portland metropolitan area.

The workers went on strike early Thursday as federally mediated contract talks broke down.

Union leaders said picket lines had been established at the more than two dozen Fred Meyer Inc. stores in Portland, Vancouver, Wash., and surrounding suburbs.

Fred Meyer was chosen as the primary target of the strike by Local 555 of the United Food & Commercial Workers, although four chains and several independent stores are in the employer bargaining group.
