Spokane Girl Will Represent State In Miss American Teen Pageant

Thu-Tam Nguyen, daughter of Thu and Hoang Nguyen of Spokane, has been selected to represent Washington state at the 1994 National Miss American Teen Pageant to be held Nov. 26 in Orlando, Fla. She was given the title of Miss Washington on July 16 at the Miss American Teen Pageant in Everett.

Nguyen, 15, attended East Valley High School and will be a sophomore at Gonzaga Preparatory School in the fall.

Tina Elmer, Colbert, recently competed in the 24th annual American Junior Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. She was among 1,700 youth participating. She and her horse, Zip It Up Easy, represented Washington state in four event at the World Show.

Elmer, 19, is the daughter of Jim and Sharon Elmer of Colbert, and she will be a sophomore at Bellevue Community College this fall.

Betsy Walter, daughter of Forey and Barbara Walter of Spokane, recently competed as a finalist in the Miss Teen of Washington pageant held in Seattle. She received the Personal Development Award for her wide range of interests and activities.

Cathy Shadle recently received the coveted Marion Herzer Award given annually to an outstanding member of Project Joy, a senior cultural service organization.

Shadle has spent the last 20 years bringing entertainment to seniors, especially those in nursing homes. She dances and sings with a number of groups including the Minstrels and the Joyettes.

Jim Davis, a wheat farmer and commissioner for the Douglas County Public Utility District, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors at Northwest Renewable Resources Center. The center, founded by leaders of industry, Indian tribes and environmental organizations, provides dispute resolution services for issues of natural resource use and management.

Joshua McClintock, Spokane, has been accepted to attend the EAA Air Academy, Oshkosh, Wis.

The academy offers young people ages 15-17 the opportunity to meet and work with aviation professionals, while living and learning the arts, sciences and lore of aviation in both classroom and workshop settings.

A junior at West Valley High School, McClintock is a member of Post 47, an aviation unit of Boy Scouts. He is the son of Michael and Majorie McClintock.

Roland Schirman, Washington State University Columbia County Cooperative Extension agent, was named recipient of the Kenneth J. Morrison Extension Award. The award is presented annually to a faculty member who has made significant contributions to agronomic crop production and soil management in Washington.

Paul Stimers, Spokane, took part in Boys State at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. The American Legion program hosted 96 young men from across the county who met to learn about government at the highest national levels.

Stimers, 17, is a senior at Ferris High School, where he is president of the National Honor Society, winner of the Yale Book Award and the Masonic Outstanding Junior Award.

The Spokane Society of Financial Analysts recently elected officers for the coming year:

Jean Toews, Spokane, has won the Inland Northwest Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Achievement Award for 1994. The award recognizes leaders in the MS community for their outstanding achievements despite the daily challenges imposed by the disease.

She was diagnosed with MS at age 24 while a psychiatric nurse in Lincoln, Neb. She retired from nursing in 1973 and moved to Washington state in 1976 where she is very active in the Spokane area, having founded the Coalition of Responsible Disabled, and a longtime member of the Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment. She also served as a consultant to Rep. Tom Foley in writing and amending the Americans With Disabilities Act in 1990.

She is an active member in the National MS Society, the YMCA, Washington Coalition-Citizens with Disabilities, American Nurses Association and Unity Church of Spokane. She currently serves as a volunteer with the AIDS Foundation of Spokane.

The Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce elected new officers for the 1994-95 program year:

Larry Stanley, chair; Chris Schnug, vice chair; Lynn Jones, secretary/treasurer; Richard Hadley, president.

New selected/elected trustees for 1994-97 are: Elaine Edwards, Chun Hwang, Claude Kistler, Jerry Layman, Valerie Marshall, Sharon Matthews, Jose Pena, Julie Prafke, Chris Schnug, Dr. Brian Talbott, Tim Welsh, Tom White and Bill Williams Jr.

Bobbi Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest in Spokane, was named chair of the 1994-95 Goodwill Industries International Conference of Executives and assumed her post in June.

She will be the leader of 183 Goodwill Industries executives for a one-year term. She is responsible for providing guidance and direction to the group.

Johnson has been employed with Goodwill Industries for 13 years, serving as president and CEO of the Spokane organization since 1982.

Citadel Broadcasting Inc. announced that Susan Rae, the promotion director for KDRK and KGA, is Employee of the Year. The award, the company’s first employee of the year honor, was a result of votes cast by all employees.

Roberta Truscott, Coeur d’Alene, has been recognized as the 1993 Nurse of the Year by District 11 of the Idaho Nurses Association. Roberta has been an RN since 1973.

Since 1985 her focus has been in biofeedback and in 1988 she obtained national certifcation. She currently manages her own business, The Biofeedback Clinic, and provides stress management and self-regulation training to clients.

She is a founding member of the Inland Northwest Biofeedback Society and was instrumental in the formation of Anxiety Aid, a local support group for those with anxiety and panic disorders.

Spokane resident Patty Thomas was honored by co-workers with the quarterly US Marine Quality Assurance award for outstanding job performance. She works in the Wire Shop.

Salon professional Kathy Fontana of Fontana Originals Salon in Spokane, has won the Crystal Trophy, top hair styling prize at the International Beauty Show in Seattle. She accumulated the most points overall in several competition categories. She won first in the Women’s Consumer Fashion Category as well as accumulating points in other areas. For her fashion category victory, she received the Gold Venus Medallion as well as cash for both awards.
