Varney’s Hitting Guides Viks To Split
Prep softball
Jessica Varney had three hits Friday as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings beat the host Lewiston Bengals 10-3 in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader.
In the second game, the Bengals rallied to beat the Vikings 7-5 in a game shortened to four innings by darkness.
In the opener, CdA pitcher Kim Sigler went the distance, giving up four hits for the win.
Lewiston’s Kerry Carpenter held the Vikings to two hits in the second game.
Christy Neumann had two hits for Lewiston, including a triple.
GSL softball
Karla Kinder smacked a leadoff, inside-the-park home run in the top of the first inning as the visiting Mead Panthers knocked off the previously undefeated Rogers Pirates 4-1.
In other games, Central Valley stopped North Central 7-0 and University beat Gonzaga Prep 5-4.
Holly Vanwert won for Mead (4-1), striking out three and walking two. Traci Moore took the loss for the Pirates (3-1), who committed five errors.
With the win, the Panthers are tied with U-Hi for the GSL lead.
At CV, Tori Mills threw a complete game one-hitter and had nine strikeouts as the Bears beat the Indians.
