U.N. Peacekeepers Take Charge In Haiti
Blue caps and white armored cars replaced green camouflage in the streets Saturday, signaling the turnover from the U.S.-led multinational force to a U.N. peacekeeping mission.
A spokesman for the new force explained there were few differences between the missions - both, in fact, dominated by the United States.
“The emphasis now is on peacekeeping,” said the spokesman, U.S. Maj. Robert Sheppard.
The U.N.’s force will include many of the old troops. Though it has been expanded to include personnel from at least 18 countries, 2,400 of its 6,000 soldiers and 900 policemen will be American.
