Montana Senate Oks ‘Two Strikes’ Measure
A “two strikes and you’re out” crime sentencing bill moved a step closer to final passage Wednesday when the Senate tentatively agreed to House changes.
As amended by the House, the measure calls for a life sentence without parole upon a second conviction for the crimes of murder, aggravated kidnapping, rape or sexual abuse of children.
The bill also includes a “three strikes” provision that mandates life without parole for a third conviction of mitigated murder, kidnapping, robbery, arson or aggravated assault.
Senators endorsed the House version on a voice vote, setting the stage for a final, roll-call Senate vote later this week that would send the bill to Gov. Marc Racicot for his signature.
