Roberts Accepts Meridian Offer

David Roberts is leaving home to go home. Well, sort of. The Kellogg High School boys basketball coach has accepted the head coaching job at Meridian near his native Boise, where he attended elementary school before moving to Kellogg.

Meridian officials offered Roberts the job Saturday. He will be recommended for hire at a board meeting Monday.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to coach at an A-1 school,” Roberts said.

Roberts, 29, spent the past five years at Kellogg, where he graduated in 1984. His record in that span was 68-50. Two of his teams qualified for state and his most recent team captured the consolation title at the State A-2 tournament.

Meridian has a rich basketball tradition. The Warriors most recently won a state title in 1991-1992 and was highly successful under exCoeur d’Alene coach Don Haynes.

Dennis Kerfoot, the head coach at Meridian the past eight years, will be the head coach at Eagle, a new school in the Meridian school district that opens next fall.

Roberts will miss Kellogg but counts Meridian as an advancement professionally.

“The five years at Kellogg have been the best five years of my life,” said Roberts, who will teach math at Meridian.
