Alford Hires Father
There will be two coach Alfords on the Southwest Missouri State bench next season.
Steve Alford, who was hired as the Bears’ head coach March 30, on Tuesday hired his father, Sam, a longtime high school basketball coach in their hometown of New Castle, Ind., as an assistant.
Sam Alford, 52, has a 452-245 record in 29 seasons of coaching prep basketball in Indiana, including a 300-188 mark in 20 years at New Castle. He was named Indiana Coach of the Year in 1979, 1984 and 1995.
The appointment is subject to approval by the university’s board of regents.
