450 Stranded By Landslide Evacuated

Associated Press

About 450 people stranded over-night by a landslide in Zion National Park were evacuated Thursday after bulldozers cut a temporary road through the mud.

About 300 guests and 150 park employees who had been stuck at the park’s Zion Lodge were escorted out by nightfall, park spokesman Denny Davies said. No one was reported injured or missing.

Earlier, officials said it would take two to three days to cut a path through the mud to evacuate those at the lodge.

The group became stranded Wednesday night when a 500-foot-long chunk of hillside tumbled into the Virgin River in Zion Canyon. A lake formed behind the slide, and water flooded the park’s main road.

The lodge was not in danger of being flooded, but the slide cut off phone, power and sewage service.
