Compiled From Wire Services

John Shumate resigned as Southern Methodist basketball coach after coming off his sixth losing season in seven years.

Shumate had three years remaining on a contract worth about $125,000 a year. Details of his contract settlement were not immediately disclosed.

Shumate, 43, was the dean of SWC coaches, having been hired in June 1988 from Grand Canyon College.

His best Mustang team was the 1992-93 squad that won the Southwest Conference regular-season title.

In the two seasons since, SMU has won a total of 13 games and finished tied for last in the SWC each time.
