Sprague, 1940s G-Prep Star, Selected For UW Hall Of Fame
Dick Sprague, a football standout at Gonzaga Prep in the late 1940s, is one of seven selected for the University of Washington’s Hall of Fame.
The 16th annual induction ceremony will be Friday at the Seattle Westin Hotel. A social hour at 6 p.m. precedes dinner at 7. Tickets are $50 and can be ordered by calling the UW alumni association, (800) AUWALUM.
Sprague was an All-American defensive back at UW in 1950 and captain of the 1952 team. He earned freshman letters in football, basketball and track in 1949, the first UW athlete in 19 years to be a triple winner. He was third-team All-Coast in football in 1951 when he was the Huskies’ punter and kick returner.
Joining him as inductees are: Ray Mansfield, football, 1960-62; Detlef Schrempf, basketball, 1982-85; Steve Power, swimming, 1969-73; Bill Hutchinson, baseball, 1929-31; Dick Knight, tennis, 1968-70; and Yumi Mordre, gymnastics, 1986-89.
Additionally, former UW band director Bill Bissell will receive the Dr. Don Palmer Award for his contribution to UW athletics off the playing field.
Basketball
Former Community Colleges of Spokane star Steve Ball from Cheney capped his career at Western Baptist in Salem, Ore., by being named to the All-Cascade Conference first team for a second straight season and earning NAIA Division II honorable mention AllAmerican.
The senior averaged 19.2 points per game while setting a Western Baptist record with a 64.6 field-goal percentage. Western Baptist finished 26-12.
Football
Former Washington State standout Drew Bledsoe, the All-Pro quarterback with the New England Patriots, is one of three pros who have signed to work in the All Northwest Football Camp June 25-29 at Whitworth College.
Camp director Shorty Bennett said Brian Habif, an offensive tackle with the Denver Broncos, and Pat Chaffey, a running back with the Green Bay Packers, also will participate.
The camp, in its 22nd year, is for athletes from seventh grade through college.

Gymnastics
Led by Brooke Bishop’s 9.475 victory in floor exercise in the 12-13-year-old age group, Spokane Elite Gymnastics’ Level 9 team placed sixth at the Washington State Championships last weekend in Tacoma.
Tina Paras is coach of the team whose success came following a disruptive year that included three months without a gym after an arson fire leveled its training site.
Other SEG finishes: 12-13-Bishop, 8th all-around, 35.125. 14-15-Gail Larsen, 2nd beam, 9.075; 9th bars, 8.35; 7th all-around, 34.95; Tara Hulbert, 6th bars, 8.55; Lindsay Brandle, 9th beam, 8.85; 11th bars, 8.3; 10th allaround, 34.675. 16-plus: Jaime Brunner, 3rd floor, 9.1.
Bishop, Brandle, Hulbert and Larsen will compete in the regional championships Friday and Saturday in Seattle.
Katie Bryntesen of Coeur d’Alene’s Lake City Gymnastics Academy won all-around honors and two individual events at the state Junior Olympics last weekend in Pocatello.
Competing in the senior division (16 and older) Level 9 Optionals, Bryntesen and teammate Lisa Dahlberg qualified for the Western Regionals in Seattle Friday and Saturday.
Bryntesen’s winning all-around mark was 36.2. She was first on beam (9.05) and floor exercise (9.15) and second on bars (9.1). Dahlberg, 33.5 all-around, was second in vault (9.2) and fourth on beam (8.35).
Jet boats
Fifteen racers will vie for $10,000 in prize money in the 11th annual Salmon River Jet Boat Race Saturday and Sunday in Riggins, Idaho.
After social activity Friday, racing begins at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday with the first leg from Whitebird to Riggins. The return begins at 2 p.m., followed by a sprint boat competition at Box Canyon at 3:30.
Sunday’s third leg will be from Whitebird to Riggins at 11 a.m. Motorists can expect delays of up to 30 minutes on Highway 95 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. CDT Saturday and 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

Rifle
Robin Orth of Spokane, a student at the Air Force Academy, was chosen for the U.S. Olympic Festival development team following a tryout in Ft. Benning, Ga., the first weekend of this month.
Orth is a Gonzaga Prep graduate. The U.S. Olympic Festival is July 22-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Soccer
Team Spokane will launch its 1995 season April 29 when the Vancouver 86ers visit Central Valley High School for a 7 p.m. match.
Tickets, available at Spokane Olympic Sports, 12505 E. Sprague, are $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for students and $3.50 for those 10 and under. All children attending will receive a free Team Spokane pennant.

Kellogg Middle School will be the site of a USA Wrestling-sanctioned freestyle tournament Saturday for boys in bantam, midget, novice, school boy, cadet and junior divisions.
Weigh-in will be from 7-9 a.m. with wrestling to begin at 10. Cost is $5 plus a USA Wrestling membership card. Medals will be awarded to the first three in each weight and division.
