Basketball

Sarah Blakley, who averaged 14.4 points and 6.9 rebounds at Capitol High School in Boise last season, has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Idaho.

Vandals coach Julie Holt said Blakley, who shot 48.9 percent from the field and 48 percent from 3-point range, was named to Idaho’s A-1 honorable mention all-state team and was first team AllSouthern Idaho Conference. She is also a two-time All-SIC AllAcademic selection and a member of the National Honor Society.

Track

Katherine Hough, a sprinter at University High School, is one of three athletes to sign with Idaho, Vandals coach Scott Lorek said.

The others are Maggie Hurst, a middle distance runner from Sonora High School in Jamestown, Calif., and Brigitta Sera, a distance runner from Budapest, Hungary. All will enroll in the fall.

Hough is a five-time district champion in the 100 and 200 meters. She also finished fifth in Washington’s AAA state championship 100 meters and sixth in the 200 in 1994, as well as running a leg on the thirdplace 4x200 meter relay team. She is tied for school records in both the 100 and 200 and is a National Honor Society member.

Hurst holds five school records from the 800 meters to the 3,200.

Sera placed fourth in the 3,000 meters at the Hungarian National Indoor Championships in 1995.

Idaho sophomore Frank Bruder ran an 8:43.36 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Oregon Invitational during the weekend to qualify for the NCAA Championships May 31-June 3 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Bruder, who had provisionally qualified the previous week, took 10 seconds off his previous time to meet the standard. The Neubulach, Germany, native finished third in the race behind former collegians Samuel Kibiri and Danny Lopez.
