Waldenbooks Will Shut Down Sunday
Waldenbooks at River Park Square is liquidating its stock of books, videos, periodicals and cards in anticipation of its closing. The store, which has been at River Park Square since the mall’s opening in 1978, will close Sunday.
Although store officials could not disclose financial information, the manager said the closing was not a result of financial stability but directly correlated to the planned redevelopment of River Park Square.
“Business has been OK,” store manager Susan Carter said Monday. “Waldenbooks’ real estate division decided to close as soon as they heard about the remodeling.”
On Thursday, the owners of River Park Square announced an $80 million project to redesign the downtown shopping mall and create a retail and tourist corridor downtown. River Park Square is owned by Citizens Realty Co. and Lincoln Investments, affiliates of Cowles Publishing Co.
To clear out the stock of the 2,600-square-foot store, videos are 50 percent off and all remaining items are 15 percent off (magazines excluded). Fixtures are also for sale.
Waldenbooks, headquartered in Stamford, Conn., does not plan to close its other Spokane location at NorthTown Mall.
