Edney Hardly Shorted
Tyus Edney, who helped UCLA to the NCAA championship, was named winner of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the top college senior under 6 feet.
The 5-foot-10 point guard is the first player from a national champion to win the award.
Although he was only able to play 3 minutes of the championship game because of a sprained wrist, Edney was the sparkplug for the Bruins (30-2) in the tournament and was named outstanding player in the West Regionals.
Edney, from Long Beach, Calif., finished his collegiate career as UCLA’s career leader with 224 steals and ranked second with 652 assists.
He was selected for the award, named for James Naismith’s daughter-in-law, by a panel from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
