Oh, To Be King Our Generation Sponsors Lilac Contest - For Guys
Well, boys, looks like the talk around school focuses on the one competition you don’t have a chance at. No prayer of winning. It’s Spectator City for you.
But, deep down, is there a part of you that wishes you could try for Lilac Queen?
Perhaps you stay wide awake at night, wishing on that sparkling star for a chance to touch the magic of the Lilac Parade. The true essence, waving majestically from a floweradorned float.
But you’re a guy. It’s simply unattainable, even in this politically correct world of ours.
Or is it? Despair no more! Here is your chance to become a future Fabio! Our Generation has decided, in your honor, to create a more equal society by allowing high school males to run for our very own “Lilac King!”
Although we must admit you won’t be allowed to ride on a float, or have any of the public appearances and respect afforded to the true Lilac Queen and her court, you will have your face published on the front of the Our Generation section itself. Imagine the publicity! The women! The scholarships!
OK, no scholarships. But it will be fun. And we’ll give you a purple hat.
All you have to do is write 250 words (or less) on why you should be named the 1995 Lilac King, not to mention the first (and, most likely, only) Lilac King Spokane has ever had.
Send us a picture if you want, but we all know this isn’t about looks. You’ll be judged on your creativity and sense of humor - since this is all in fun. Here are a few questions you might want to address, though you can write about anything you want:
What’s your best quality?
What would you change about yourself if you could?
How would you change the world, if you could?
How would you change Spokane?
How do you think you’d fare in a swimsuit competition, and what kind of suit would you wear?
If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
What do you like best about looking into that mirror?
How do you most resemble a lilac (physically or spiritually)?
Your letter does not need to be typed, but must be legible. This is open to freshman through senior boys since, as we said, we’ll probably never engage in such silliness again.
Send your entries, with your name, age, school and phone number, to Our Generation, Lilac King, 999 W. Riverside, Spokane, WA 99210-1615. The deadline is May 3 and we’ll announce the King in the May 17 Our Generation section, just in time for the May 20 Torchlight Parade.
Since this is in no way affiliated with the Spokane Lilac Association, you’ll still be on the curb with the rest of us, but you’ll know in your heart you’re The King.
xxxx The real royalty While we have our fun crowning a Lilac King, Our Generation wants to make sure people recognize the hard work and dedication that goes into being an actual Lilac Princess - and the anxiety that comes along with it. Twelve princesses chosen from Spokane area schools will compete for the title of queen Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Ferris High School auditorium. The winner will devote the next year to special appearances, representing Spokane throughout the region. The other princesses, the queen’s court, will also spend a great deal of time in public appearances. On Saturday, they’ll each give a speech on an individually chosen topic. Admission is $2 advance and $3 at the door. Here are the names of the 12 princesses: Emily Ireland, Ferris; Marcy Latta, Central Valley; Tara Sullivan, Mead; Michele Weinman, West Valley; Sarah Bunnell, University; Aubrey Allen, Northwest Christian; Emily Mattoon, East Valley; Kim Krebs, Rogers; Christina Valentine, Gonzaga Prep; Carrie Keyes, Shadle Park; Jennifer Hunter, Lewis and Clark; and Sarah Barnes, North Central. Good luck!
