Gsl Girls Favored At Meet Today
The track season has a long way to go, but one of the races could be over tonight.
The marquee matchup among league track meets today is a Greater Spokane League showdown between the University and Mead girls.
The 3:45 meet at North Central will probably determine the league champion, although there are two more league outings on the schedule.
The other GSL pairings have Ferris and Central Valley at Rogers and Gonzaga Prep and Lewis and Clark at Shadle Park.
At key matchup in the Frontier League is Clarkston at West Valley. The Bantams boys tied defending champion Cheney last week. The other pairings for the 3:30 meets are East Valley at Cheney and Colville at Pullman.
Relying on relays
There have been two additions for the 32nd Mooberry Relays Saturday at Rogers High School.
Joining the lineup are a boys long jump and girls triple jump. Field events at the meet are figured as relays with the top two individual distances from teammates added to determine the winner.
The Richland girls and Mead boys are the defending champions. Not returning to defend her crown is Female Athlete of the Meet Fran Green of Kamiakin. The Braves are competing in an Oregon meet this weekend.
There are 16 boys teams and 16 girls teams entered. The first field events start at 10:30 and the first race, the girls 3,200, is at 11:25.
Too short
Two other schools participating in the Pasco Invitational last weekend bought javelins from the same company that Mead acquired its javelin - a javelin that didn’t meet requirements for use in the meet.
The javelins came up 2 inches short of the minimum.
The inconvenience didn’t bother Mead junior Allison Beatty, who used a borrowed spear to win.
Notable
Mead distance runner Emily Thompson will attend Montana State next year. She said she wanted to keep her blue and gold wardrobe. … Erik Mickelson of Newport in Bellevue, the defending AAA 800 champion and current state leader, is going to Nebraska.
