Scott Asan University Year: Senior Sport: Baseball Position: Catcher
University High School senior catcher Scott Asan stood out last week because of the level of the opposition.
He didn’t hit for the cycle or smack three home runs in games against last-place teams. Asan did his damage against the teams at the top of the league standings.
In a 9-2 Titans win against Shadle Park Friday, Asan went 3 for 4 at the plate and had two RBIs, helping U-Hi into a first-place tie with the Highlanders.
On Saturday, Asan went 2 for 4 to move past Rogers in the standings with a 10-2 win over the Pirates. On Tuesday, Asan was 3 for 3 and drove in three runs in a 12-4 win against North Central.
“The thing is, Scott’s not the best hitter you’ll find,” U-Hi coach Don Ressa said. “What makes Scott so valuable is his intelligence behind the plate.”
A 3.8 grade-point average and acceptance to Gonzaga University will attest to that.
Up until his three-game tear, Asan was hitting just .218. He’s now carrying a .458 average.
It pays to take batting practice three days a week at 6:30 in the morning.
“He’s close to being a perfectionist,” Ressa said. “He doesn’t understand that if you get three hits in 10 trips to the plate that you’re a pretty good hitter.”
