Young America Wins To Keep Cup Finals Bid Alive
The mermaid boat Young America handled the choppy Pacific Ocean Wednesday and rode the shifty wind back into the lead of the America’s Cup defender finals.
After losing three of its first four races this series, Young America extended its lead on all six legs of the race course and beat America3’s mostly women’s crew on Mighty Mary by 2 minutes, 46 seconds.
With five races remaining in the roundrobin Citizen Cup finals, Young America has four points while Mighty Mary and Stars & Stripes remain tied with three apiece. Young America faces Stars & Stripes today.
Whichever yacht survives this round will defend the America’s Cup in a best-of-9 series starting May 6.
Meanwhile, challenger finalists oneAustralia and Team New Zealand’s Black Magic 1 remained at the docks for the second straight day, this time because of rough seas.
Black Magic 1 has a 4-1 lead in the bestof-9 series and needs only one more win to carry the Kiwis into the America’s Cup finals. The sixth race is also today.
