Carrie Zarse, a bronze medalist at last month’s Pan American Games, won her third U.S. national title Thursday at the Phillips 66 National Diving Championships.

Zarse, 20, of Ann Arbor, Mich., edged Tina Johnson of North Oaks, Minn., by less than three points for the women’s 1-meter springboard title.

Zarse, a junior at the University of Michigan, led from start to finish of the five-dive contest. In addition to Johnson, she held off bronze medalist Reyne Borup, defending champion Melisa Moses and 1995 NCAA champion Cheril Santini.

Earlier, 1992 NCAA platform champion David Pichler of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., qualified first in men’s 10-meter platform as 12 divers advanced to Sunday’s final. Chris Mantilla was second and defending champion Bryan Gillooly was third.

Qualifying 11th was Scott Donie, the 1992 Olympic platform silver medalist, who returned to platform competition for the first time since July 1993.
