Thieves Kill Malawi’s Top General
Fri., April 21, 1995
The commander of Malawi’s army was shot to death by thieves attempting to steal his car, army headquarters said Thursday.
Gen. Manken Chigawa was attacked by two men after he stopped to buy fruit Wednesday at a roadside market near the village of Ntcheu and the border with Mozambique, the army said.
One of the thieves was caught and beaten to death by villagers, witnesses said.
The dead man had papers identifying him as a Mozambican. His accomplice evidently fled back across the unguarded border.
Chigawa was promoted to head of the 10,000-man army last year.
