University In First Place For Now

GSL baseball/softball

Abbott and Costello asked, “Who’s on first?” Had they been watching Greater Spokane League baseball this season they’d have been asking, “Who’s in first?”

Heading into Thursday’s play, the league lead had changed five times among four teams.

Now the top spot has changed six times.

University (7-2) has sole possession of first place after defeating Lewis & Clark 7-1.

At Hart Field, the Titans used four hits from Kevin May, three of which were doubles, and a Scott Asan home run to secure the win against the Tigers (0-9).

U-Hi pitcher John Sims scattered eight hits against LC and moved his record to 3-0.

At Shadle Park, Central Valley knocked the Highlanders out of their share of the top spot with an 11-6 win in which Shadle Park (6-3) booted the ball around for five errors.

The Bears’ (5-5) Jeremy Nesbitt went 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

At Seafirst Stadium, Rogers beat North Central 5-4. For the Pirates (6-3), pitcher Eric Pearson struck out 11, pitched a complete game and moved his record to 3-2.

Rogers and Shadle Park are tied for second place.

At Ferris, Mead avenged an opening-day loss to the Saxons (5-4) with a 9-4 win, thanks to six Ferris errors.

Mead (4-5) pulled away with a sixrun fifth inning.

At the halfway point of the season, University, Rogers, Gonzaga Prep and Shadle Park each have been in first place at one time.

In today’s games, Ferris travels to University, Mead plays Shadle Park at Seafirst Stadium, Rogers is at Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep is at North Central.

Lewis & Clark has a bye.

All games are scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

Softball

Mead’s 8-0 win at Ferris and North Central’s 3-2 win over Rogers in eight innings puts the Panthers (8-1) atop the GSL standings.

The Pirates (7-2) are tied for second with University (7-2). The Titans beat Lewis & Clark 11-1.

LC is 1-8 for the season.

At Rogers, the Indians (4-4) scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth when, with two outs, the Pirates’ first baseman dropped the ball when attempting to tag NC’s Angie Corliano. That allowed Jen Risinger to score from third.

The Pirates stranded runners at second and third in the seventh and eighth innings.

Pirates pitcher Traci Moore suffered only her second loss of the season.

For the Indians, pitcher Roxanne Devine got the win. She scattered seven hits in the contest.

At Ferris, Mead pitcher Holly Vanwert pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 in the Panthers’ win.

Mead pounded out 16 hits, highlighted by Holly Turners’ two-run homer in the seventh.

At Hart Field, the Titans’ Stephanie Shelton tripled with the bases loaded in the third inning.

At Shadle Park, Central Valley beat the Highlanders 8-0 with the help of five Shadle errors. CV (6-3) pitcher Tori Mills scattered seven hits and went the distance.

Shadle is 2-7.

In today’s games, Ferris is at University, Mead is at Shadle Park, Rogers heads to Central Valley and Lewis & Clark has the day off.

All games will begin at 3:45 p.m.
