Gsl Baseball Teams Fight For No. 2 Positioning
The GSL baseball race became a bit cloudier Friday as four teams moved within a game of the first-place University Titans (7-3).
Ferris, Shadle, Rogers and Central Valley are in a four-way logjam for second place at 6-4, one game back.
Mead (5-5) came from behind to beat Shadle 5-3, Ferris toppled University 12-8, CV stopped Rogers 8-1 and Gonzaga Prep beat North Central 7-2.
At Seafirst Stadium, Jeff Rinck pounded a grand slam over the left-field fence with two outs in the sixth inning as the Panthers beat the Highlanders.
Mead began its sixth-inning rally when D.J. Funk singled. Adam Morris then reached base on a bunt and Ray Hattenburg walked to set up Rinck’s game-winning heroics.
Keat Shankle went the distance for the Panthers while Shadle’s Chris Wilson suffered his first loss of the year.
At University, Steve Riggs went 3 for 4 with an RBI as Ferris scored eight runs in the third inning to outlast the Titans.
Relief pitcher John Steinman held the Titans to one hit after the fourth inning. University’s Ben Butler had a three-run home run, finishing 3 for 4 with four RBIs.
At CV, R.J. Delmese pitched a complete game, striking out four, as the Bears beat the Pirates.
At NC, the Indians (3-7) gave up three walks and committed two errors as the Bullpups (5-4) scored four runs in the sixth inning for the win.
GSL softball
The league race remained a shootout as the top three teams all won.
The league-leading Mead Panthers (9-1) stayed on top with a 12-2 win over Shadle Park. In the battle for second place, University bested Ferris 6-1 and Rogers stopped Central Valley 3-2. University and Rogers are a game behind of Mead at 8-2. In the other game, North Central held off Gonzaga Prep 8-7.
At Mead, Holly Vanwert tossed a one-hitter, fanning seven, and Kelly Kinder smacked a leadoff home run in the first inning as the Panthers beat the Highlanders (2-8).
Mead’s Holly Turner finished 3 for 3 and Vanwert and Chris DeGuire each had two RBIs.
At Central Valley, Traci Moore had two hits and went the distance, striking out five, to lead the Pirates to the win over the Bears (6-4).
Jaime Christenson and Charlotte Perry also had two hits for Rogers.
At University, Jamie Fox struck out 12 while giving up three hits and no walks as the Titans beat the Saxons (1-8).
University’s Toshua Ballou finished 2 for 3 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs scored.
At NC, Wendy Taylor had an infield single, scoring Shawna Kristin in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Indians (5-4) beat the Bullpups (3-6).
Kristin finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs.
Frontier League softball
The West Valley Eagles (5-0) remained undefeated sweeping the Colville Indians (1-4) in both games of a doubleheader at Colville.
In the first game, Carie Koker went the distance and had two hits to lead the Eagles to an 8-1 win.
In the nightcap, West Valley rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to hold off the Indians 7-4. Darcy Sohns took the win for the Eagles.
