Nic Rallies, Sweeps Ricks

North Idaho College used an eight-run ninth inning to turn a three-run deficit into an 11-6 win in the opening game of a Region 18 doubleheader Friday and completed the sweep of Ricks College with an 11-8 victory in the nightcap in Rexburg, Idaho.

The Cardinals trailed 6-3 heading into the top of the ninth, but pounded out six base hits, including two by Mark Collins, for the victory.

Collins finished the first game 4 for 6 with two doubles and a run batted in. Jeff Danton added two hits and three RBIs for the Cardinals to help starter Jason Bowles (5-2) win his fourth straight league game.

In the second game, Chris McGregor’s two-homer, seven-RBI performance proved the difference.

Chris Caponigro came on in the fourth inning and struck out three over the final three innings to earn the victory, his third against one setback.

Mark Collins had four hits, including two doubles for the Cardinals.

The Big Bend Vikings rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch, 9-8, in an NWAACC Eastern region game in Moses Lake.

Sasquatch pitchers issued 17 walks, including four in the ninth, which forced in the tying and winning runs.Jason Ueberuaga went 3 for 4, drove in two run and scored two more to lead the Sasquatch, who fell to 10-3 in league and 12-6 overall. Big Bend improved to 5-7 and 7-9.

Softball

Julie and Deanna Fountain combined to strike out 15 batters and the Community Colleges of Spokane overwhelmed Shoreline Community College 19-0 and 14-0 in an NWAACC Eastern Region doubleheader at Spokane Falls.

Carla Coffied led the 17-hit attack, going 2 for 2 and driving in four runs.

Deanna Fountain went the distance on the mound, striking out four, to up her record to 7-2.

The Sasquatch smacked nine more hits in the second game and capitalized on seven Dolphin errors.
