Small Plane Crashes, Killing Family Of 5

Compiled From Wire Services

A small plane crashed in a light drizzle just after takeoff, killing all five members of a Tennessee family, authorities said Saturday.

The plane crashed three miles from Quincy’s airport, where the pilot had stopped for several hours to check weather reports, said Gadsden County Sheriff W.A. Woodham.

Witnesses said they heard sputtering from the single-engine Piper Cherokee before it crashed through pine trees and exploded.

Killed were: pilot Steven Paine, 47; his wife, Sile, 40; and their children Thomas, 13; Kara, 12; and Sophia, 4.

The Germantown, Tenn., family had been visiting relatives.
