Fire At Crematory Damages Building

From Staff Reports

A fire Monday at the Cremation Society of Washington caused $2,000 worth of damage to the building’s roof and attic.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 12:58 p.m. and doused the fire in 10 minutes, said Ron Bassen, the Spokane Fire Department’s battalion chief.

Wood framing caught fire because it was too close to a crematory vent pipe, Bassen said. A crematory was operating when the fire began.

Only a couple of people were inside the building at 1821 E. Sprague when the fire began, and no one was injured, he said. They were allowed back inside once firefighters extinguished the fire.
