GSL soccer
Gonzaga Prep kept its chances for a Greater Spokane League soccer title alive by blanking University 3-0 Monday at Gonzaga Prep.
It keeps the Bullpups within three points of Mead, which beat Ferris 2-0. G-Prep and Mead play Wednesday at Gonzaga Prep.
In other action, Lewis and Clark moved into a tie for third place with U-Hi, posting a 1-0 win over North Central. Shadle Park kept its playoff hopes alive by blanking Rogers 4-0, moving within four points of the Indians for the fifth and final playoff spot.
At Gonzaga Prep, the Bullpups, who placed a healthy starting lineup on the field for the first time in two weeks, got revenge for an overtime loss at U-Hi. The Bullpups blew a three-goal lead in the last 15 minutes of the game.
The Bullpups opened the scoring in the first half, with two goals within 2 minutes of each other. Chad Zlateff scored the first on a through ball from Craig Connell and beat the keeper. The second was a Jake Mark shot from 35 yards out that was caught up in the wind and floated over Titans keeper Richie Bernal.
The last goal was scored by Joe Ascolese, who combined with Zlateff for a give and go, in the penalty box for the last score.
At Ferris, the Saxons played with the Panthers in a scoreless first half, but too many errors led to two Panthers goals in the second half.
Ryan Minor opened the scoring by trapping a cross with his chest and dropped it to his left foot and scored. The Panthers scored a goal with 5 minutes left when Jim Morton got a through ball and the keeper broke it up, only to have Andy Smid there to recover the ball and score.
Ferris got a good performance from goalkeeper Travis Ruhl, who saved four point-blank shots, including a breakaway.
At Hart field, the Tigers got a goal from Tyler Fransen 20 minutes into the game, and it was enough to hold off the Indians.
Fransen got a pass from Levi Rowse and turned and scored from 30 yards out into the high right corner.
At Rogers, the Highlanders scored two early goals and then used the wind to their advantage in the second half to keep the ball at the Pirates’ end for most of the half.
The Highlanders’ Zack Kingsley and Jeremy Stuart each scored in the first half, taking advantage of two misclears by Rogers.
The Pirates got off seven shots in the first half. Kenneth McArthur missed a couple of opportunities, including a direct free kick just outside the penalty box, which hit the cross bar.
