Collins Set To Replace Chaney As Pistons Coach With 5-Year Deal
The Detroit Pistons have picked former Chicago Bulls head Doug Collins as their new coach.
Sources said Don Chaney was told what had been rumored for months: He was no longer coach of the Pistons. At the same time, the team locked up the final details of Collins’ multi-year contract, believed to be for five seasons at more than $1 million a year.
Collins has been out of coaching since he resigned under pressure in Chicago following the 1988-89 season.
Collins met with the Pistons for several hours last week, both about the coaching and the general manager’s position.
Collins could not be reached for comment, but on his radio show in Chicago, he acknowledged interest from the Pistons.
