All-Star Game Has Excellent Credentials
It would take more space than is available to mention all the awards won by the players who will participate in the Second Annual Girls AAU AllStar Basketball Classic.
Suffice to say, the game - to be played at 7:30 p.m. June 16 at Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene - is star-studded.
The game will feature 15-player teams from North Idaho and eastern Washington.
Among the players are all the Idaho and Washington players named to The Spokesman-Review all-area team, all the starters from Lake City’s state title team and all of the All-Greater Spokane League first team. All high school classifications in both states are represented.
Coaches for Washington are Linda Sheridan of Shadle Park and Jim Stinson of Davenport. For Idaho, it’s Dave Stockwell of Lake City and Sheila Sharp of Coeur d’Alene.
The game is dedicated in the memory of Jack Blair, the former Central Valley girls coach and activities director at Lewis and Clark, who died in December. He helped game director Ron Adams form the Spokane Stars girls AAU basketball organization.
Six players from the Idaho-Washington game and eight players with college scholarships make up the roster for the Spokane Stars U-18 team that will participate in the national AAU tournament in Texas beginning June 30.
Kelly Bartleson, Tracy Ford, Tricia Lamb, Jen Kerns, Melissa Dodge and Alli Nieman are on the team, along with Tanya Kirk of Central Valley, who played in the all-star game last year before heading to Northern Arizona.
Bartleson and Ford are headed to Eastern Washington University, Kerns signed with Washington State and Dodge is going to Vermont.
Also on the team is Takeyah Jackson of Franklin in Seattle, who has signed to attend UCLA. The other college-bound players are Lynne Overly of Centennial, Idaho, who has an academic scholarship to Albertson College, in Idaho; and Nikki Fields of Cle Elum, signed with Pepperdine.
The other player is Lynn Brown, a junior at Liberty Bell.
Spokane is the host city for the 1996 U-18 and U-16 national tournaments. Adams is expecting a minimum of 120 teams, possibly as many as 160. The dates are July 5-13, 1996. Anyone interested in helping organize or work at the tournament can contact Adams at 928-8512.
Softball showdown
Mead and Rogers will play under the lights in a Greater Spokane League softball game Friday night at 5:45 at Franklin Park on Field No. 1.
Barring a season-ending collapse by either team, the game will have major ramifications on the race.
Rogers coach Paul Cooley and Mead coach Bridget Monaghan felt like a marquee game under the lights would be good idea for both teams.
“Pushing the time back and putting the game under the lights with the good weather may bring some poeple out to the park.”Rogers pitcher Traci Moore and Mead pitcher
Holly Vanwert will most likely be on the mound. Moore and Vanwert have combined to pitch three no-hitters this season.
Legend returns
An assembly Friday morning at 9:30 at Rogers High will kick off the first Gerry Lindgren Fund Run, featuring Lindgren, the Pirates alum and former world-record distance runner.
The focus of the weekend is the Alumni & Friends Walk/Jog-A-Thon between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Participants get pledges for how far they walk or run on various courses at Rogers.
Lindgren will visit the school Friday after the half-hour assembly. There will be an open house in the Rogers cafeteria Friday night from 7-9.
Lindgren remains the state prep record-holder in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, set in 1964. He went on to win 11 NCAA titles at Washington State and set a world record in the 6-mile run.
Traveling time
The two big track meets in the area Saturday are at Coeur d’Alene and Riverside.
The annual Super-1 Invitational has moved from Coeur d’Alene to the city’s newest high school, Lake City.
Field events begin at 10 a.m., with running prelims at 10:30. Running finals begin at 12:30 p.m.
About 23 full teams, plus individual entrants from several other teams, are expected.
Another 23 teams will be at Riverside. Field events begin at noon and running events at 1.
DeTray to Montana St.
Skiy DeTray, the third-ranked high school distance runner in the country, has signed with Montana State.
DeTray has a best time of 9 minutes, 4.76 seconds in the 3,200 meters, which is the third-best time in the nation this year. Teammate Micah Davis, who is headed to Oregon, is 3 seconds faster and No. 2 in the nation.
DeTray is the fastest runner Montana State has ever signed, MSU coach Rob Stark said.
