Tyson Fight Nearly Set
Mike Tyson’s first opponent in more than three years will be Peter McNeeley on Aug. 19, according to pay-per-view exhibitors in New York and England. Nothing is definite, but that’s the date and opponent being mentioned by promoter Don King.
The site will be the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas, which has signed Tyson to an exclusive six-fight deal.
Tyson, idle since June 1991 when he outpointed Razor Ruddock, turns 29 in two months. He has not been seen training since his release March 25 from prison, where he served three years.
But no one in boxing believes he needs to train for McNeeley, even if the handpicked opponent is coming off a 6-second knockout - yes, 6 seconds - Saturday night in Hot Springs, Ark.
A preliminary fighter on a Bobby Crabtree card, McNeeley, 36-1 with 30 knockouts, slipped a right hand, landed a left hook and knocked Frankie Hines cold.
Of course, Hines is 2-40 since 1990.
