Ferris Edges Central Valley To Remain In Gsl Baseball Chase

Ferris batted around in the first inning at Seafirst Stadium, scoring four runs after two were out, then held off Central Valley 6-5 in Thursday’s featured Greater Spokane League baseball game.

Both teams have 7-5 records, one game behind leaders University and Shadle Park.

Eric Sandberg and Robert Woods had RBI singles and two other runs scored on passed balls in Ferris’s initial frame.

Winning pitcher Jon Steinman walked nine but only allowed four hits. CV scored twice in the seventh before reliever Jake Fancher struck out the final two batters.

University (8-4) outlasted Mead (5-7) 13-10 at home after leading 12-5 through four innings. Brandon Svelmoe was 3 for 4 with two doubles and a home run, Aaron Moe went 3 for 3, and Scott Asan 2 for 2 with a homer as each drove in three runs. Sam Chimienti had three hits and a homer for Mead.

Shadle (8-4) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past visiting North Central (3-8) 8-7.

Brett Corigliano hit a two-out, two-run single in the seventh to complete the Highlander comeback. He had four RBIs for the game. Teammate Steve Schaber was 3 for 3, while Jimmy Lake had three RBIs and Steve Sebesta was 3 for 4 for NC.

In the day’s other game, Gonzaga Prep (7-4) tied idle Rogers for third with a 12-5 home win over Lewis and Clark.

Winning pitcher Bob Strahl struck out eight and had two hits. Jeff Robinson and Paul Greif had three hits apiece. Steve Gleason hit a tworun homer in the first.

GSL Softball

League-leading Mead (11-1) scored the game’s only run in the sixth inning to beat host University (9-3) in an important GSL game.

Panther pitcher Holly VanWert pitched a four-hitter and stranded 11 baserunners.

Kelly Kinder scored the winning run after singling, advancing to third on a passed ball and scoring on an ensuing bad throw.

Visiting Central Valley (7-5) beat Ferris 5-2, all runs unearned, to remain fourth. Sara Taes of CV and Kylee Curry of Ferris, the youngest player in league at 14, each had two hits.

Shut out for five innings and outhit 13-10, North Central (6-5) rallied twice to tie, then scored three eighth-inning runs at Shadle Park to win 7-4.

Five walks and Brooke Egger’s two-run double accounted for six fifth-inning runs during Gonzaga Prep’s (4-7) 12-2 win over visiting Lewis and Clark (1-10). Meredith Giesa, who hit a solo home run in the first inning, drove in three runs.
