EV Benefits From Cheney Soph’s No-Hitter

Cheney sophomore pitcher Tucker Urdahl’s no-hitter wasn’t enough to move the Blackhawks into first place past West Valley in baseball.

But East Valley owes him a debt of gratitude.

While the Blackhawks (9-5) were splitting a doubleheader with the visiting Eagles (10-4) 10-0 and 11-10, the Knights (also 10-4) swept Clarkston (3-11) 7-4 and 9-2 to share the lead.

Because they won two of three meetings with the Eagles, EV can claim top seed in the end-of-season tournament with a win in its season finale at Pullman on Tuesday.

The Knights, hitting more than .400 as a team, scored in each of the first five innings getting two RBIs apiece from Brock Rogers and Pat Stookey.

A six-run fourth-inning in game two that included Keith Osso’s tworun double, was part of EV’s 15-hit outburst.

Osso had four hits for the day as did Steve Pipkin who ran his record to 5-1 in game two after recording his fourth save in the opener.

Rich Burland had three hits.

Urdahl blanked the Eagles 10-0 in the opener of the Cheney-WV twin bill, striking out eight and walking two while facing just 17 batters in five innings.

He also finished the day with five hits.

In game two, Riley Allen broke WV’s scoring drought with a two-run homer in the second inning and doubled home another run in the Eagle three-run third.

Cheney rallied from a 9-4 deficit to tie the game entering the seventh when WV’s Jeremy McClintock doubled and scored on an error and Justin Tichy scored on Andy Imada’s base hit and another error.

WV then weathered a basesloaded situation in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Home-standing Colville (7-7) came from behind twice late to sweep Pullman (3-11) 8-7 and 12-10, securing the league’s fourth playoff spot.

A four-run seventh won the opener, spoiling a 3-for-4, 3-RBI effort by Greyhound Tom Gmelch.

A three-run sixth won the second game in which Colville’s Brady Noble went 3-for-4.

Pullman’s Ray Kallaher had triples in each game.

Soccer

League runnerup East Valley (7-3-1) won 8-0 at Clarkston (0-9-2) as Clint Burgess scored three times and Tory Swenson had two assists.

Host WV (6-4-1) dominated Colville (0-9-2) 7-0 to remain in third place, with Joe King and Quinn Sharpe each scoring twice.

Riverside/Deer Park (6-4-1) edged Pullman (6-5-0) in a game with playoff implications, Ryan Baker scoring on a free kick from 15 yards away and Seth McKay scoring on a deflection two minutes later, early in the first half.

Frontier season ends Tuesday.
