Lukas’ Speedy Filly Will Test Her Skills At Kentucky Derby
Serena’s Song, trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ sensational 3-year-old filly, will run in the Kentucky Derby next Saturday at Churchill Downs.
“We’re going to go ahead and run the filly in the Derby,” Lukas said Saturday. “We’re going to run her against the boys and give her a chance at immortality.”
The last filly to run in the Derby was the Lukas-trained Winning Colors, who won in 1988. Serena’s Song would be the 36th filly to start in the Derby.
Lukas also will start the colts Timber Country and Thunder Gulch.
At Louisville, Ky., Peaks And Valleys burst into the lead with an eighth of a mile to go and won the $113,100 Derby Trial - or was that the Preakness Trial - at Churchill Downs.
Peaks And Valleys survived a charge at the finish that saw both he and secondplace Our Gatsby closing hard on the tiring leaders, Mr. Greely and Muhtafal, who finished 4-5.
Although the Kentucky Derby looms, five in the Derby Trial field of seven 3-year-olds had designs on the May 20 Preakness, second in the Triple Crown series, as their next start.
