Past, Present Tight Ends Have Stellar Scrimmage
It was difficult to tell just which tight ends - the current ones or the former ones - were most impressive in Eastern Washington University’s football scrimmage Saturday.
The trio of current tight ends on offense caught 11 passes for 206 yards, while the former ones now on defense broke up two passes, and had an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
However, it wasn’t as difficult to figure out which Eastern unit had the better day, as the defense surrendered just five scores in 22 possessions in the 113-play scrimmage that ended the second week of spring practices for the Eagles.
“I was really pleased with the defense,” said second-year head coach Mike Kramer, who watched as defensive squads kept the offense from scoring in its first seven possessions. “With only two starters returning on defense, it’s not just a matter of how hard they play but how long they play. They’re going to play hard and aggressive all the time, but they need to get used to playing for longer periods of time.”
The scrimmage featured the No. 1 Eagle units taking on each other and the second-stringers doing the same, while three quarterbacks rotated time between offensive squads.
Former University High School standout Brian Sherick had a slight edge in the quarterback war, completing 9 of 19 passes for 177 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Harry Leons was 8 of 18 for 129 yards, a TD and two interceptions, and Scott Bond was 8 of 19 for 96 yards, one TD and no interceptions.
