WSU Closes In On Rained-Out UW

Robert Ramsay and Kyle Kawabata pitched complete games as Washington State used the home run to subdue Portland State 8-2 and 4-1 in a Pacific-10 North baseball doubleheader Saturday at Bailey Field in Pullman.
Ramsay (4-2) went the distance in the first game, striking out three and walking two, while Kawabata (9-2) picked up the win in the nightcap with a six-strikeout, nowalk performance.
WSU (13-9, 23-24) closed within one game of division-leading Washington. The Huskies (13-7, 19-23) were rained out at Oregon State. PSU falls to 11-11, 17-30.
WSU received back-to-back homers from Duane Stewart and Mike Wetmore in the third inning of the first game. WSU’s Ty Solomon homered to lead off the fourth.
Ron Naumu added to WSU’s home-run barrage in the second game, belting a solo shot to left field to open the second inning.
WSU and Portland State conclude their weekend series today at 1 p.m.

Portland 7-2, Gonzaga 2-9
Darin Blood struck out 14 and Scott Morgan drove in four runs as host Gonzaga beat the University of Portland 9-2 in the nightcap of a Pac-10 North doubleheader to earn a split at Pecarovich Field.
The Pilots (11-12, 25-22), behind Jeff Simpson’s two home runs and four RBIs, won the opener 7-2. Gonzaga is 11-12, 25-22 overall.
Blood (11-3) walked just one and had a one-hitter through six innings. He lowered his ERA to 2.33 with his eighth complete game of the season.
Scott Morgan gave Blood all the runs he needed with a three-run homer to left in the first off Portland starter and loser Jesse Travis. Morgan’s seventh home run of the season gave him the team lead.
The teams will conclude the threegame series with a single game today at 1 p.m.

Whitworth 11-3, Whitman 6-8
Whitworth (6-5 NCIC, 15-14-1) exploded for 11 runs on 12 hits with the help of Sean Peterson and Don O’Neal in the first game of a doubleheader against Whitman (3-10, 7-18). Peterson collected three hits, including a solo homer, and O’Neal connected on his ninth and 10th home runs of the season.
Larry Turner, Erik Sundet and Chris Fukai also knocked two hits each for the Pirates, and Brandon Allard homered.
In the second game, the Missionaries used home runs by Lucas Ward and Eric Nutt in the second game.

Jason Uberuaga’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly scored Andy Sage in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Sasquatch (14-4 NWAACC East Division, 16-7) a win in the second game and a doubleheader sweep of Wenatchee Valley.
The wins helped CCS maintain the top spot in its division.
In the first game, Jason Matthews and Carl Clark combined for five hits and nine RBIs.
Matthews went 3 for 3 including a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Clark, a former Cheney High standout, went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the a five-run first inning.

Community Colleges of Spokane scored four runs in the seventh inning of the second game to post a doubleheader sweep at Skagit Valley.
Amy Flaa batted 4 for 6 on the day for CCS (17-1 NWAACC East Division, 18-6), and collected five RBIs.
Pitcher Deanna Fountain (9-3) got the win in the first game, while Julie Fountain (9-3) won the second.
