Sheriff Will Request Help With Overtime
Spokane County Sheriff John Goldman will ask county commissioners today for more money to cope with jail overcrowding.
On July 24, a record 677 inmates filled the Spokane County Jail. That number had dropped only by 10 to 667 by Monday.
Overcrowding in at least four jail wings has resulted in two inmates being assigned to cells designed only for one.
The overcrowding has prompted mandatory overtime for corrections officers has been instated.
About $339,000 in overtime has been paid so far in 1995, which is the total yearly budget for overtime at the jail.
