Skills Center Students Win Several Honors

Several students in Spokane School District 81 won a variety of honors in the closing days before summer vacation arrived.

The Spokane Skills Center’s “dream team” of first- and secondyear students won the prestigious Jeanette Brenner-Lilac City Student Award during the 1995 semiannual Inland Empire Cosmetology Association spring competition.

The students are: Chastity Austin, Michelle Yancey, Kristy Grommet, Angie Henry, Joline Louie, Molly Evans, Opal Dove, Andrea Blum, Jennifer Forss, Stacy Rawlings, Melanie Brinkley, Amanda Haley, Tabatha House, Helen Kammer, Julia Moore, Stacy Polly, Sunshine Stewart, Courtney Stackle and Christy Weimer.

Winning individual awards were: Chastity Austin, first place in evening makeup; Molly Evans, second place in men’s haircutting and third place in women’s haircutting; Joline Louie, first place in fingerwaves and pincurls, and second place in storybook characters.

Kathleen Monaghan, an elementary art teacher for District 81, was named the Washington Alliance for Arts Education Educator of the Year for her “remarkable contributions.” The Lewis and Clark High

School Tiger Drill Team earned a superior rating in state competition this year, the same as it has done the past 13 years. No other Washington state school has achieved this highest-possible record. Senior captains were Abby Guenther and Ruth Farley. The coach is Barbara Slaughter. Alicia Beale is assistant coach.

The N.A.T.I.V.E. Project/ Spokane Public Schools Native Life Center won the U.S. Department of Education Indian Education 1995 Showcase Award. The project will be featured next fall at the National Indian Education’s annual convention in Tucson, Ariz. The after-school and weekend tutoring program was developed to serve 200 Native American students in need of assistance.

Nine Youth Academy for Excellence seniors received $650 scholarships. The students and their high schools are:

Biniam Afenegus, Dominic DeCaro, Sumitra Hallam, Brandy Valentine, all of North Central; Sambath Chay, Lewis and Clark; Rodney Martinez, Shadle Park; and Albert Mitchell, Markane Sipraseuth and Shalena Wilkerson, all of Ferris.

Richard Jamieson, junior vice commandant of the Melvin M. Smith Detachment, Marine Corps League in Spokane, was voted Marine of the Year for Washington state at the league’s annual convention in Wenatchee. One outstanding contributions cited was his work with the Toys for Tots program.

Thomas Jamison, of the Melvin M. Smith Detachment, was invited by U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt to serve on a Veterans Advisory Committee.

The detachment installed officers for the 1995-96 term: Dave Hamm, Spokane, commandant; E.B. Thompson, Coeur d’Alene, senior vice commandant; Richard Jamieson, Spokane, junior vice commandant; and Wayne Mauer, Spokane, judge advocate.
