Dollar Follows Stocks Lower

The dollar fell as U.S. stock and bond markets retreated Tuesday in response to to fresh evidence of a strengthening American economy.

In late New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 1.3762 marks, down from 1.3866 late Monday.

Analysts said that for months, the dollar has been sensitive to downturns in other U.S. financial markets. The stock and bond markets were undercut Tuesday by a report from the National Association of Purchasing Management that its index of manufacturing growth shot up to 50.5 percent from 45.7 percent in June.

An index reading above 50 percent indicates an expansion of activity at the nation’s factories, while a reading below 50 percent indicates a decline.
