Dr. Henry Foster, President Clinton’s former nominee for U.S. Surgeon General, is scheduled to be in Spokane on Oct. 21 for a Planned Parenthood dinner.

The Tennessee obstetrician will be the key speaker at the Gala Dinner, a $75-per-plate fund-raiser, Planned Parenthood announced Tuesday.

Foster, an expert in teenage pregnancy, became a controversial figure after conservative Republicans and abortion opponents made an issue of abortions he’d performed.

The White House first indicated Foster performed one abortion, then revised that figure to about a dozen before acknowledging he performed 39 abortions over his four decades as a doctor.

In June, the GOP-dominated Senate doomed Foster’s nomination by refusing to vote on it.

Foster will attend a reception and dinner at Spokane’s Crescent Court Ballroom, a statement by Planned Parenthood of Spokane and Whitman counties said.
