Commissioners Kill Plan To Remodel, Hire Receptionist

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane County commissioners have backed off a plan to spend $37,000 remodeling their office and hiring a receptionist.

In light of massive budget cuts, including the elimination of 81 jobs, commissioners said the timing was bad.

“We just decided we’ve got to bite the bullet, too,” panel Chairman Phil Harris said Wednesday. “We really need a receptionist, but we’ll get by.”

Commissioners had wanted to build a wall to separate their secretaries from the public.

The commissioners still want the wall, Harris said, and will use inmate labor from Geiger Corrections Center - at nominal cost - if it is ever built.
