Frank Horwath Spokane

Service for Frank C. Horwath, 75, was Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Horwath, who was born in Curlew, Wash., died Thursday.

He had lived in Spokane for 65 years and worked at the Inland Empire Paper Co. mill for 25 years.

Mr. Horwath was the proprietor of the West Valley Conoco service station.

He served in the Coast Guard during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Pearl; one son, Frank Horwath of Spokane; two daughters, Barbara Sierra and Kay Bower, both of Spokane; two brothers, Arthur Horwath of Spokane and George Horwath of Cody, Wyo.; and seven grandchildren.

Lawrence Madson Sr. Spokane

Memorial service for Lawrence E. Madson Sr., 72, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. There will be private inurnment Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Madson, who was born in Plummer, Idaho, died Saturday.

He graduated from high school in Worley, Idaho, and farmed and logged in Idaho. He moved to Spokane from Emida, Idaho, in 1972.

He is survived by three sons, Dennis Madson of Columbus, Miss., and Steven and Lawrence Madson Jr., both of Spokane; two daughters, Janine Ford of Spokane and Kathy Pottratz of Latah, Wash.; two sisters, Dorothy Grisskowski of Spokane and Cheryl Truax of California; one brother, David Madson of Spokane; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Helen ‘Curly’ Purvis Spokane

Service for Helen R. “Curly” Purvis, 77, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Purvis, who died Monday, was born in Hermiston, Ore.

She graduated from West Valley High School and had worked for Armour before World War II. She retired from The Crescent in 1988.

She is survived by two daughters, Illene Carlson of Spokane and Patricia Peterson of Everett; one son, James Purvis of Coeur d’Alene; the children’s father, Pat Purvis; five grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Karlene Vaillancourt Yakima

Funeral Mass for Karlene J. Vaillancourt, 52, was held Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with her brother-in-law, the Rev. Kevin Vaillancourt, as celebrant. Burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Vaillancourt, who was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., died Saturday.

She moved to Post Falls from California in 1970. She and her husband, Brian, moved to Yakima in 1989.

She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Brian Vaillancourt; three sons, Brian Vaillancourt of Post Falls, Ken Vaillancourt of Issaquah, Wash., and Ed Vaillancourt of Yakima; two daughters, Victoria McEnaney of Post Falls, and Therese Vaillancourt of Yakima; one sister, Nancy Ballou of Santa Clareta, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

C. Dale Smith Calder, Idaho

Graveside service for C. Dale Smith, 62, will be at Saturday at 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home, St. Maries, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Missouri, died Saturday.

He enlisted in the Army in 1949 and also served two years in the Air Force.

He was a partner in Smith and Day Trucking in Lewiston and later owned his own trucking business. He moved to Calder in 1987 and retired in 1989.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge of St. Maries, was a retired Teamster and recently was commissioner of the St. Joe Valley Fire District No. 4. He also was a life member of the Disabled Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Jo; six sons, Luke of Calder, Craig of Arizona, Simon of Washington, Jeff of Seattle, Kelly of Meridian, Idaho, and C. Wayne of Missouri; eight daughters, Becky Bruebaker of California, Lisa Breeden of Moscow, Idaho, Michelle Zywiak of Spokane, Cindy Clifford of Boise, Meridee Smith of Nampa, Idaho, Tine McDaniels of Missouri, Vicky Smith of Boise, and Debbie Means of Calder; two brothers, Freddy of Caldwell, and Roy of Nampa; and 26 grandchildren.

Herman Zachary Worley, Idaho

Rosary for Herman D. Zachary, 70, will be today at 7 p.m. at the Worley Community Building. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the same location. Burial will follow at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Cemetery in DeSmet. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home, St. Maries, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Zachary, who was born in Plummer, died Sunday.

He served in the Army during World War II, then returned to Plummer.

He was a farmer and worked for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. He also was a substance-abuse counselor and served on the Region 10 Alcohol Board for the Northwest Tribes.

He retired in 1990 and enjoyed stick games, shooting pool, rodeos and playing cards.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, the Disabled American Veterans and the Sacred Heart Mission Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Caron Spencer of Lapwai, Idaho; two daughters, Lucille Hermiston of Worley and Sharon Zanka of Wellpinit, Wash.; a brother, Leonard Davison of Worley; and two sisters, Virginia Delorme and Iris Mullan, both of Plummer.

Doris Craig Spokane

Memorial service for Doris Craig, 86, is planned for 4 p.m. Thursday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home with private inurnment.

Mrs. Craig, who died Friday, was born in Ephrata.

She operated her own business as a certified public accountant until she was 80 years old.

Her husband, Henry Craig, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one son, Mike Craig of Spokane; one sister, Grace Stewart of St. Petersburg, Fla., and two grandchildren.

Mary C. Streeter Ritzville

Service for Mary C. Streeter, 96, will be at 11 a.m. today at Zion Congregational Church in Ritzville. Burial will follow at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville is in charge of arrangements..

Mrs. Streeter, a lifetime Ritzville resident, died Monday at Life Care Center in Ritzville.

She was a homemaker and was involved with the American Legion Auxiliary and the American Red Cross.

She was a member of Zion Congregational Church.

Her husband, Ralph Streeter, died in 1993.

She is survived by two sons, Barney Streeter of Spokane and Stanley Streeter of Ritzville; one daughter, Celia Replogle of Carson City, Nev.; two sisters, Esther Hughes and Naomi VanVleet, both of Ritzville; two brothers, Otto Miller of Pasco and Austin Miller of Odessa; five grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

John Johnson Spokane

Memorial service for John D. Johnson, 46, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Johnson, who was born in Littlefork, Minn., died Monday at Sacred Heart Medical Center.

He moved to Spokane in 1961 and graduated from North Central High School.

He served in the Navy for three years.

He worked at Gonzaga University as an electrician for the last 12 years.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Johnson; one son, Joseph Johnson, and one daughter, Elena Johnson, both of Spokane; one stepson, Jordan Gross, and one stepdaughter, Laura Gross, both of Spokane; his father, John Johnson of Spokane; six sisters, Barbara Marabello, Norma Wilmot, Linda Lyon, Annette Johnson and Jeanette Johnson and Loretta Barr, all of Spokane; and two brothers, James and Michael Johnson, both of Spokane.

George Ridgewell Spokane

Memorial service for George H. Ridgewell, 68, will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Park. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Ridgewell, who was born in Burlington, Ontario, died Saturday at home.

He had served in the Canadian Army for five years and in the Canadian Navy for three years. He then served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years and retired in 1977.

He had lived in Spokane since 1970.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Vida Ridgewell.

Gladys McDonald Bellevue, Wash.

Service for Gladys Evelyn (Sterley) McDonald, 90, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeNorth. Burial will be at Orchard Prairie Cemetery.

Mrs. McDonald, a former Spokane resident, died Saturday in Bellevue.

She was born in Everett. She moved to Spokane in the mid 1940s and lived here until 1989, when she moved to Bellevue to be with her daughter.

She is survived by one daughter, Nadeane Meehan of Bellevue, Wash.; one son, James Manning of Lodi, Calif.; four stepsons, Floyd, Dick, Gary and Roger McDonald, all of Spokane; three stepdaughters, Lois Leuthold of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Evelyn Burbank and Marilyn Ankerson, both of Spokane; one brother, Everett Sterley of Wenatchee, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Carrie Keevy Spokane

Service for Carrie O. Keevy, 83, is set for 11 a.m. today at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Private burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in South Center, Minn., Mrs. Keevy died Sunday.

A homemaker, she had lived in Spokane since 1933.

She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Frank Keevy, died in 1982.

She is survived by two brothers, Leonard Sorenson of Benson, Minn., and Albert Sorenson of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Alice Lunde of Spokane, and one grandson.

Clyde Smith Worley, Idaho

Service for Clyde L. Smith, 77, will be today at 1:30 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel of Moscow, Idaho.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Newport, Wash., died Sunday.

He was educated in the Palouse area and graduated from high school there.

He served in the Army during World War II, then returned to Moscow. He was a partner in various grocery stores and owned Clyde’s IGA in Moscow for many years. He retired in 1981 and moved to his lake cabin at Cave Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene. He spent winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Mr. Smith was a life member of both the Elks Lodge and American Legion. He also was an avid sports fan and fisherman, and enjoyed dancing.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Dennis of Moscow and Alan of Troy, Idaho; a daughter, Kathy Taggart of Spokane; a brother, Clinton of Cave Creek, Ariz.; two sisters, Hazel Holstine of Moscow and Dorothy West of Milwaukie, Ore.; a half-brother, Harry Walker of Clarkston, Wash; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
